North Carolina Colleges That Offer Early Childhood Education

Early childhood educators work in a variety of environments, from private preschools to public grade schools and social service agencies. Individuals interested in entering the early education field usually must have some formal training gained through post-secondary classes. North Carolina residents will find multiple college-level programs that lead to a degree in early childhood education. These include courses of study that focus on teacher preparation, educational theory and child development.
  1. Johnston Community College

    • Located in Smithfield, North Carolina, Johnston Community College offers an associate's degree option in early childhood education. This program can be completed in four semesters of full-time study. Courses include: child development; child guidance; educational technology; observation and assessment; and early childhood practicum. Johnston students may also apply for specializations in administration, for those interested in working as a center director or administrator; family childcare; or special needs. Degree certificates are issued in administration; early childhood; early childhood infant/toddler care; special needs; school age; and family childcare.

    Mount Olive College

    • North Carolina's Mount Olive college offers a transfer option bachelor's of science in early childhood education. This 126-credit-hour program includes courses in early childhood development, exceptional children, administration, literacy and assessment, as well as a hands-on practicum. Additionally, students must complete general education classes in English composition, science, history, health, math, literature and computers. Students are expected to have taken at least 55 credit hours of college courses in general education and child development prior to admission to the transfer program. Courses are taken over three terms, equaling a total of 75 weeks of study.

    Wake Tech Community College

    • Raleigh's Wake Tech Community College offers associate's degree, diploma and certificate programs in early childhood education. Certificates include specializations in administration, child development associate, family care and infant/toddlers. While all programs include courses in child development and early childhood education, some degrees have different credit requirements, resulting in differing completion times. For example, the associate's of applied science degree is a 74-credit program that takes a minimum of four academic semesters to complete, while the Early Childhood Diploma requires only 44 credits of coursework. Specializations, such as early childhood administrator, may require additional courses beyond early childhood education. These may include staffing and human resources, marketing or program evaluation.
