Chemistry Safety Training

Chemistry safety training is important for students and employees in a school chemistry lab. It teaches them how to prevent accidents and injuries, and what to do in an emergency.
  1. Responsibility

    • It is the responsibility of the lab manager or chemistry teacher to maintain the laboratory and its equipment, organize records on safety training, record incidents, train people in emergency procedures, provide oral and written safety instructions to each person, maintain, inspect and keep inventory of chemicals, and make sure everyone wears protective equipment.

    Apparel

    • Working or studying in a chemistry lab requires that appropriate eye protection, such as goggles, be worn at all times. Students and workers must also wear disposable gloves when handling chemicals or hazardous materials. In addition, full-length lab coats and closed-toe shoes must be worn.

    Handling

    • People should always wear gloves while handling chemicals. They should also verify that the information on container labels is correct. When chemicals are transferred to new containers, they should bear labels correctly showing the contents, concentration, hazards, the date and your initials.

    Emergencies

    • Everyone using a chemistry lab should be trained on the location of all exits in the lab and building, as well as the location of the emergency phone. In addition, everyone should know where to find and how to operate fire extinguishers, safety showers, eye washes, and first-aid kits.
