Individuals interested in learning offshore safety and emergency procedures can take a certificate course offered at colleges such as the University of Louisiana and the Texas Engineering Extension Service of the Texas A&M University System, These courses are generally tailored to offshore oil and gas personnel and some courses are designed for individuals working in particular offshore areas, such as tropical locations.
The course curriculum includes safety induction, sea survival, helicopter safety and escape, and firefighting and self-rescue. Topics discussed include alcohol policies, emergency descents from helicopters, boarding a survival craft, the use of a fire blanket and breathing apparatuses.
Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (BOSIET) certificate, issued by the Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organization (OPITO). Graduates can choose to take further courses in offshore training, such as a helicopter underwater escape training course and management of major emergencies.
