Canada Hotel Safety Training

There are a number of different factors relating to safety in Canadian hotels. The central issues include employee safety and hotel security. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) and the Hotel Association of Canada provide several recommendations to ensure both employee and guest safety.
  1. Hotel Worker Safety

    • Hotel workers, such as housekeepers, launderers, and porters, run the risk of incurring injuries related to lifting, twisting, bending and reaching. In response to these risks, the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety suggests developing working methods and techniques that minimize these movements as much as possible. It is furthermore recommended that hotel workers wear supportive shoes and avoid a constrained working posture.

    Outside Training

    • Outside of the training offered by hotels themselves, the CCOHS also offers courses on a range of safety topics, from hazardous cleaning materials, to preventing falls, to planning for pandemics.

    Hotel Security

    • According to the Hotel Association of Canada, in order to improve hotel security, Canadian hotels are replacing numbered room keys with coded insert cards. This reduces the likelihood of someone breaking into a hotel room. Furthermore, most hotel employees are equipped with cell phones and headsets and trained to stay in constant contact with management should an emergency arise.
