Individuals interested in a career in offshore helicopter work can pursue a training program to become an entry-level helicopter landing officer. The programs are generally tailored to those with previous experience in offshore or onshore helideck assistants.
The course includes training in topics, such as the roles and responsibilities of a helicopter landing officer, helideck equipment, loading and unloading passengers and cargo, emergency responses and rescue procedures. Students also learn about meteorology, helicopter identification, communications and firefighting procedures.
In addition to coursework, students learn through practical applications in helicopter procedures, aviation firefighting exercises and simulated rescue enactments. At the conclusion of the course, students take a multiple-choice examination to demonstrate their grasp of the concepts and techniques taught throughout.
