How to Develop a Nursing Informatics Course

According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), every nursing baccalaureate program should include a nursing informatics course. Nursing informatics is an emerging field, focusing on giving nurses technology management and data skills. According to the Nursing Informatics Learning Center, the increased use of technology in health care, along with the fact that medical information is literally doubling every five years, make nursing informatics courses necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Train existing nursing professors on integrating nursing informatics into their courses. According to the Nursing Informatics Learning Center, nursing informatics must be reinforced in every class to create confident, computer-literate nurses.

    • 2

Study other nursing schools' existing nursing informatics courses. According to the Kwantlen Polytechnic University in British Columbia, Canada, each informatics course should include basic computer and research literacy; using patient data to improve care, and managing health data and research.

    • 3

Consult the AACN Handbook, "The Essentials of Baccalaureate Education

for Professional Nursing Practice," to ensure that the course meets nursing informatics requirements. AACN requires basic technology skills, comfort with existing technologies and the ability to use and analyze patient data.

    • 4

Gain the support of library staff, the university technology team and clinical locations for nursing informatics support. Practicing nursing informatics skills must happen often and skilled staff are needed to support aspiring nurses.
