Lab Safety Goggles Instructions

Many labs require that you wear safety goggles. The purpose of goggles is to prevent chemicals from splashing into your eyes and causing damage to your vision. There are a few different types of safety goggles that are designed to be worn for specific types of experiments or activities. In addition, there are a few steps that should be taken to ensure that the lab safety goggles are secure and properly put on.

Select the correct goggles. Chemical splash goggles cover the brow and sides of the face and are designed to be used when working with chemicals. Impact goggles are designed to prevent flying objects or debris from making contact with your eyes; these goggles have a brow bar and wrap around the sides of your face. Ultraviolet goggles are designed to be worn while working with ultraviolet lamps.

Wipe the inside and outside of the lab goggles with an alcohol wipe before putting them on.

    • 3

Remove sunglasses from your face. Sunglasses can't be worn with lab goggles because the tint limits your vision. Prescription glasses and contact lenses, however, can be worn with goggles.

Place the goggles over your face so the lenses are fully covering both eyes or your glasses. If the goggles have a strap, ensure the strap is tight enough to secure the goggles in place.
