Universities in New York That Offer Good Adolescent Education Programs

Secondary education teachers play an important role in the education system. They provide students with the necessary foundational knowledge needed for college or other vocational career paths. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects better-than-average job growth for teachers through 2018.

    • Teacher's College at Columbia University is considered to be one of the best schools for the training of teachers in just about any subject. The secondary education program at Teacher's College was also ranked among the top 10 programs in the nation. The teacher's certification program is offered as part of a 32-hour master's degree program, which allows graduates to teach in grades seven through 12 in the state of New York. Teachers can be certified in a variety of subject areas such as math, English, social studies, technology and science.

    New York University

    • New York University (NYU) is also among the best schools in the nation for training teachers. "U.S. News & World Report" ranked the NYU program No. 16 among all programs nationwide. Like the program at Teacher's College, the Mprogram at NYU offers teaching certification through its various Master of Arts degree programs. The school offers education majors the opportunity to be certified in a number of different areas. Some of these areas include social studies education, English education, educational theater, foreign language education, math education, music education, science and special education.

    Cornell University

    • Cornell University also offers opportunities to pursue various certification in secondary education. At No. 36 in the 2010 "U.S. News & World Report" rankings, Cornell's teacher education program ranked as the third highest rated teaching preparation program in the state of New York. Cornell offers its secondary teacher certification program as part of the Master of Arts program as well. Students in various undergraduate majors are eligible for the the master's degree program. Cornell's program differs from the NYU and Columbia programs in its certification offerings. Cornell offers certifications in agricultural education and science education. Science education can be pursued in the areas of physics, biology, chemistry and earth science.
