The top-rated university included among the list of the nation's top art programs is Yale University. U.S. News & World Report ranked the Yale program second only to the world-renown Rhode Island School of Design in its 2008 list of top art programs nationwide. The Yale program offers degrees at both the undergraduate and graduate level. The School of Art emphasizes four primary areas of study: graphic design, sculpture, photography and painting/printmaking. The undergraduate program is open to all Yale students who wish to pursue a major in the area of art. The graduate program is specifically designed to enhance the student's experience in the studio. To this end, the school offers the Master of Fine Arts degree. Yale encourages its graduate art students to explore classes outside of the departmental curriculum in order to enrich their educational experience. Other graduate and professional students are welcome to take art classes at Yale.

VCU tied with the Cranbrook Academy of Art and the Maryland Institute College of Art for the fourth-highest ranking overall. VCU offers various undergraduate programs such as art education, art history, graphic design, art foundation, interior design, printmaking and printing, sculpture and photography, along with other programs in the arts. Graduate degrees are also offered in most of these areas. VCU's graduate programs in sculpture, graphic design and painting have all been ranked in the top 10 among all programs nationwide.

The Carnegie Mellon University's College of Fine Arts is the third-highest-rated university among schools offering art by the U.S. News and World Report. CMU offers four different programs at the bachelor's degree level: science and arts, fine arts, the humanities and arts, and a newly offered computer science and art.
