Illinois Universities That Offer Online Master's Degree Programs

If you've graduated with a bachelor's degree and would like to take your education further, your next step on the college ladder may be a master's degree. Students who prefer to learn online will find a variety of master's degrees in almost every field of undergraduate study. If your dream school is in Illinois but you're not close enough to commute or have responsibilities that keep you at home, consider one of the state's online school programs. Colleges throughout Illinois offer both brick-and-mortar campuses and online divisions with distance learning master's options.
  1. University of Illinois Online

    • Earn a Master of Science in Food Science and Human Nutrition from the University of Illinois' online program. The two-year program includes topics in food engineering, food chemistry, membrane separation, chemistry of lipids in foods, biotechnology, flavor chemistry, water relations in foods, diet and cancer, food safety and sanitation in food production. Classes are completed via an online virtual classroom; this means students must be online at a particular time of the day to interact with professors and classmates, give presentations and chat about group activities.

      Students must have a bachelor's degree (any major is acceptable, but students must have coursework in microbiology, calculus, general chemistry and organic chemistry) with a minimum grade point average of at least 3.0. Three letters of recommendation and a resume are required; Graduate Record Exam scores are not required. Because the program is conducted online, students require a minimum of 64 MB RAM (128 recommended), sound card, speakers, Internet connection (high speed recommended), word processing program, web browser and at least 1 GB hard disk space.

    Illinois Institute of Technology

    • The Illinois Institute of Technology IIT Armour College of Engineering offers an online Master of Biomedical Imaging and Signals degree program. The two-year degree covers topics such as computer vision and image processing, analysis of random signals, digital signal processing, data compression, digital speech processing, wave physics and applied optics for the imaging scientist, concepts of medical imaging and biomedical instrumentation.

      Candidates must have a bachelor's degree. A major in electrical or computer engineering is preferred but not required; students without this major may be required to take additional courses such as circuit analysis, multivariate and vector calculus, general biology and engineering electronics. The technical requirements for the program are a PC or MAC, Real Player and an Internet connection.

    University of Illinois at Chicago

    • Offered by the University of Illinois at Chicago's online division, the Master of Science in Patient Safety Leadership degree is targeted at current health professionals and may be completed in as little as 18 months. Students take one course at a time for an eight-week period, covering topics such as patient safety activities, organizational change, simulation training, collaboration, inter-professional teamwork and the culture of the healthcare system. Courses are offered in a self-paced process; students need not be online at any one particular time of the day.

      A bachelor's degree in any field is required. Computer requirements include at least one GB of hard disk space, an Internet connection (DSL recommended), minimum 400 MHz processor, minimum of 64 MB RAM, sound card, speakers and a word processing program.
