Rutgers University offers a Master's of Science in Library and Information Science, a program accredited by the American Library Association. The program has six focus areas: Human Information Interaction, Organization of Information, Information Access, Information Systems, Management and Information and Society. Students must complete at least one “lead course” in each of the six areas. Graduation requires 36 credit hours offered on a full time or part time basis. Some courses are available online. Rutgers also offers field experience programs where students work in actual libraries or information centers.

Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ offers a Masters of Arts in School and Public Librarianship. The American Library Association has not accredited this program. The MA is designed to provide the qualifications to become a school librarian or a Library/Media Specialist. The program is offered through the College of Graduate and Continuing Education and can be completed on a part-time basis. Courses are also offered online.

Texas Woman’s University, Florida State University and the University of Southern Mississippi all offer 100% online degrees and each is accredited by the American Library Association. New Jersey residents who do not wish to relocate can take advantage of the online options at these three schools. Mississippi offers a Masters of Library and Information Science online but does require face to face online chats for each course. Texas offers two ALA accredited online programs, the Master of Library Science and Master of Arts in Library Science. Florida also offers two accredited programs, Master of Science and Master of Arts.
