Marine Emergency Duty Training

Unique hazards and dangers can arise on recreational and commercial seafaring vessels. A marine emergency duties training program is designed to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to respond to emergency situations.
  1. Program

    • The Canadian marine emergency duties training course is available as a stand-alone program, or as a part of a marine engineering technology degree. The program is intended for individuals first entering the marine industry who have not received prior training in emergency situations that can arise at sea.

    Prerequisites

    • The only prerequisite required for admittance to the stand-alone program is that applicants are at least 16 years of age at the time of entry. Applicants to the degree program must possess a secondary school diploma or the equivalent.

    Curriculum

    • Topics discussed throughout the program include lifesaving measures, emergency responses, survival rescue, marine environment hazards and safety equipment and records. The course is presented through a combination of theory-based textbook work and practical application. Students have the opportunity to practice emergency skills through water and fire emergencies in a pool and with simulated firefighting experiences.
