The California Maritime Academy, located in Vallejo, offers a Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering Technology. Students in the program learn about the fundamentals of engineering within a ship's electrical and mechanical systems. Courses in the program offer students an opportunity to obtain skills in intellectual learning, applied technology, leadership, global awareness and practical focus. Students are also required to participate in three 60-day practical training experiences. While two of the experiences are training missions, the final one is conducted aboard a military vessel.
Located in Trenton, New Jersey, Thomas Edison State College offers an Associate of Science in Applied Science and Technology degree in marine engineering technology. This 60-credit program combines general education requirements with core curriculum courses in the field. Courses in this program include fluid mechanics, naval engineering systems, steam engineering, and instrumentation and control. In addition to looking for employment opportunities, students also have the option of transferring to a bachelor's degree program in this area.

Students are required to complete 143.5 credits during the four-year program and take classes in shipboard medicine, steam generators, fluid and diesel power, ship structure and stability, and ocean survival. The program ensures that graduates have strong communication skills; can solve technical problems; conduct experiments in the field; and work in teams.
Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, located in Green Bay, offers an associate degree in marine engineering technology that teaches students to assist in the design of marine systems. The program is 67 credits and requires students to complete courses in naval architecture, materials science, geometric dimensioning, hydraulics and ship construction. Applicants to the program must have taken two years of algebra, one year in geometry and achieved strong scores on the Academic Skills Assessment College Math test. Graduates are qualified to use computer-aided design equipment, interpret mechanical blueprints, understand measuring systems and work in team settings.
