Fast Engineering Degrees

Engineering degrees, no matter the specific discipline you are interested in pursuing, typically require a set number of years to complete. You need to go through a four-year bachelor's degree program and then a two-year (or longer) master's degree program in order to earn your engineering degree. However, there are a handful of schools in the United States that offer faster engineering degrees. Known as "fast track engineering degrees," these programs teach the same material, but at an accelerated speed so that you can finish faster.
  1. Texas A&M University

    • Texas A&M University's Look School of Engineering offers a combined BS and MS engineering program which allows you to finish your degree faster. With the program, you are able to begin studying for your master's degree during your junior year of undergraduate studies. This way, you can complete the entire program in a total of five years, shaving a year off the traditional requirements. You need to apply and be approved by the individual departments in order to participate in this program.

    University of Missouri-Kansas City

    • Similarly to the program at Texas A&M, the University of Missouri-Kansas City offers an accelerated five-year combined BS and MS program. The difference is it offers only computer engineering or electrical engineering degrees in its fast track program. In addition to this, the program requires that you enter the undergraduate school with a high school GPA of 3.50 or better and a 28 or better grade on the ACT Math exam. In addition, if you are a transfer student, you cannot have a grade below a C in any core engineering subject (science, engineering, math and technical subjects) and your total college GPA must be at least 3.0.

    University of Alabama- Birmingham

    • The fast engineering degree program at the University of Alabama-Birmingham is similar to those at the previous schools in that it allows you to finish your degree early. However, there are a few important differences. First, this program does not allow you to apply directly out of high school. You must be within 48 credit hours of graduation from the undergraduate school. At least 15 credits need to have been completed at the University of Alabama--Birmingham and you must have a 3.0 GPA or better. This program also offers some monetary savings as you will be entitled to take graduate-level courses during your senior year at undergraduate prices. You will also not be required to take a GRE exam for entrance to the School of Engineering.

    Drexel University

    • Drexel University offers accelerated engineering degree programs for all areas of engineering study except computer engineering. The program is open to current Drexel students once they have completed at least 90 credit hours at the school, but no more than 120 credit hours, allowing them to take on master's level work during their senior year. No official admissions guidelines are offered, however the school does list the average SAT score and GPA for students accepted to the program. For the BS/MS Engineering program, they are 1372 and 3.8 respectively. Drexel offers an accelerated PhD engineering program as well, with the average SAT and GPA scores for acceptance being 1398 and 3.9 respectively.
