Independence, Missouri, is a town in the metropolitan area of Kansas City. The town offers a few opportunities for students to earn associate, bachelor's and master's degrees in a variety of academic and professional fields. School choices include a Christian-based university, community college, vocational cosmetology and a four-year university.
  1. Graceland University

    • Graceland University's campus in Independence is a Christian school that welcomes believers in all faiths to its bachelor's and master's degree programs. Notable bachelor's degrees offered at the Independence campus include business administration, criminal justice, health-care management and nursing. Students may also study at the School of Nursing, the Community of Christ Seminary and the Center for the Study of the Korean War.

    Metropolitan Community College

    • Metropolitan Community College's Blue River Campus offers academic and professional degree programs. Common programs include agribusiness, drafting, land surveying and solar thermal technology. Students can also join the campus soccer team, the Trail Blazers. Financial aid is available on both a merit and need basis. Merit-based aid is given for students with special talents, skills or characteristics. Seventy percent of students transfer from MCC to four-year colleges.

    Independence College of Cosmetology

    • Independence College of Cosmetology offers degrees in basic cosmetology and esthetics. Basic cosmetology courses include hair styling techniques and shop management. The esthetics program covers hair removal, massage, make-up application and nutrition classes. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, a driver's license and birth certificate, and must complete an interview with the school director. Because of the close proximity students will have with others, all must be free of any contagious disease.

    National American University

    • National American University offers associate, bachelor's and master's degree level programs at its Independence campus. Associate degree candidates can study paralegal studies, medical assisting or criminal justice. Bachelor degree candidates can major in accounting, business administration and organizational leadership among others. Master's degrees in management and business administration are also offered. The career services department at NAU offers a class on preparing a resume and interviewing techniques.
