Samford offers a range of different courses, but all teaching is conducted with Christian methodology in mind. It was opened in 1841, and its founding principle was "the establishment of a Theological Institution," a tradition that is continued today by the work of Beeson Divinity School, an interdenominational center for Bible study integrated into the university in 1988. It is also the largest privately supported institution for higher learning in Alabama.

Heritage Christian University (HCU) promises a Biblical education that is geared toward the demands of the real world, offering courses that teach the practical aspects of Christian ministry. During each full-time semester, every student at HCU devotes two hours to a local ministry, with a focus on "targeted evangelism"; that is, taking the word of Christ directly to local communities. The university was founded in 1971, and to this day only two men have held the presidency.
