How to Cite Using Turabian

Turabian style is a documentation style published by the University of Chicago. It is a version of Chicago style. Turabian style is used by college students and researchers when writing papers, theses and dissertations. The style provides guidance on two styles of citation: bibliography style and reference list style. Bibliography style uses footnotes whereas reference list style uses parenthetical citations.

Instructions

  1. Book

Compile a list of all the relevant details of your source material such as author, publication year, publication city and publisher. Include relevant page numbers, edition, volume and issue numbers.

For example, assume we are citing from page 83 of the book "Recovering Landscape: Essays in Contemporary Landscape Theory." The book has an editor, James Corner, and it was published by Princeton Architectural Press in 1999 in New York.

Cite the book using the bibliography format. The footnote will read as follows (note that the title of the book would be italicized in a real footnote):

      1. James Corner, ed. Recovering Landscape: Essays in Contemporary Landscape Theory (New York: Princeton Architectural Press, 1999), 83.

The entry will be included in the bibliography list as follows (here too the book title would be italicized in a real bibliographic entry):

Corner, James, ed. Recovering Landscape: Essays in Contemporary Landscape Theory. New York: Princeton Architectural Press, 1999.

    • 4

Cite the book in your text using the reference list format. The in-text parenthetical citation will read as follows:

      (Corner 1999, 83).

The corresponding entry that will be included in the reference list will be (italicize the book title in a real reference list)

Corner, James, ed. 1999. Recovering landscape: Essays in contemporary landscape theory. New York: Princeton Architectural Press.

    Magazine

    • 5

Assume we are citing the magazine article "The Comeback Country" written by Daniel Gross in the April 19, 2010 issue of "Newsweek."

    • 6

Cite the magazine using the bibliography format. The footnote will read as follows (italicize the name of the magazine in a real footnote):

      1. Daniel Gross, "The Comeback Country," Newsweek, April 19, 2010, 29-35.

The entry will be included in the reference list as follows (italicize the name of the magazine in a real reference list):
