How to Cite a Review in Chicago Style

When you compose term papers, it is crucial to correctly cite each source that you use. This includes reviews of books that appear in journals, magazines or online sources. The Chicago Manual of Style sets out clear guidelines for the proper citation of reviews in a reference list. The exact form your citation should take depends on whether you read the review in print or whether you accessed it online.

      List the author of the review in the following format: Smith, Albert.

      List the title of the work being reviewed in the following format: Review of Hamlet, by William Shakespeare. The title of the work being reviewed should appear in italics.

      List the name of the magazine or journal and the issue number. The name of the journal should appear in italics. For example: Western Literature Quarterly 67

      List the month and date of publication in parentheses, followed by a colon, such as: (January 2001) :

      Ensure that the final citation appears in the following format: Smith, Albert. Review of Hamlet, by William Shakespeare. Western Literature Quarterly 67 (January 2001) : 345-346.

    Citing a Review That Appears On the Internet

      List the author of the review in the following format: Smith, Albert.

      List the title of the review in quotes, such as: "Daring and Death in Denmark." If the review has no title, skip to step 3.
