How to Set Up Upstream for Seminars

If you're a college professor, setting up Ustream for university seminars means the difference between broadcasting from one location to students in many places, and all of you having to travel to a classroom. Setting up your webcam and hosting a class allows you the convenience of teaching from home even when you might be sick, when traveling would be too difficult. With an UStream account, you will need a webcam with appropriate flash software that you can download from the Abode website.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the Ustream website, and then click the "Sign Up" button. Fill out the provided application with your personal information, and then insert an appropriate "User Name." The user name will need to be practical and easy, to help your students find it. Click "Create My Account" when you are finished.

    • 2

Click on your "User Name" at the top of the page to access the dashboard. Click "Account Settings," and then upload a picture from your computer's hard drive and write a biography about your course. Enter the title of the course and its educational intent. "Click "Save," and then re-click on your "User Name."

    • 3

Click on the "Create a Show" button to allow a box to appear in the middle of the webpage. Type in the name of your seminar and the year, and then click the "Create" button.

    • 4

Access the "Show Info" page from your "Dashboard" and input keywords that are related to your class. In the "About" box, enter a small summary of the course, as you did in Step 2.

    • 5

Email the link of the seminar to your students, and then set up your webcam and laptop before class begins. The camera should allow your virtual class to see what a regular onsite class can see. Make sure that the camera points in such a way as to include the whole board or whatever displays you use.

    • 6

Access the Ustream website again, and log in to your account before the class begins. Click the "Broadcast" button when you are ready. A new broadcast window will open.

    • 7

Click the "Start Broadcast" button to begin the broadcast. If you want to record the broadcast, click "Start Record." The record will save the show's channel to your profile, so that your students can watch it later.
