Natural Resources Management Courses

Natural resources departments for the state and the federal government deal with wildlife including fisheries, habitat, conservation, control and education. Educational courses about natural resources include a lot of study of biology. Resource management is an issue from a global perspective all the way down to an issue in households. These programs combine understanding of policy and economics with science.
  1. Curriculum

    • Natural resource management classes include information about how certain events and situations can ultimately destroy an ecosystem if they are ignored. Students are asked to come up with solutions for these problems. Introductory courses include information on the biology of bodies of water, swamps, deserts and forests. Students learn about habitats, food sources and new species. One of the most important parts of natural resource management is acting in a timely manner; without paying attention to time-sensitive processes, problems can arise.

    Specific Courses

    • Forest management courses include information about how humans affect the ecosystems of forests, and how to reverse this process. A portion of study takes place in labs where students learn how to nourish plants and how to care for insects and animals. Policy courses teach students about the laws that govern natural resources, including policies that haven't been effective. Policies are only affective if applied, and students learn why, how and when to apply certain policies.

    Career Options

    • Natural resource management courses can help you in working towards a bachelor's or master's degree. Program graduates can work in state or federal agencies or privately firms. For example, a graduate can find a job in the United States Department of Agriculture or Wildlife or in a national park. Within a state, graduates will be qualified to work in a health or agricultural department or an educational setting. Students can also work as consultants or for mining or forestry companies.
