Northwestern University features the Center for Retail Management, which is under the umbrella of the Kellogg School of Management. The center is one of the largest schools in the country for retail management. Education at Northwestern includes category management, database marketing, research, consumer behavior analysis and the integration of marketing into retailing. Portland Community College offers two programs for students in retail management, including an Associate of Applied Science program and a professional certificate program. The associate program requires two years of study in areas such as business math, public speaking, principles of retailing, accounting, business law, office management, small business management, sales and both macroeconomics and microeconomics. The retail management certificate is a pared-down version of the associate degree, requiring only two terms to complete. All courses in the certificate program are also in the associate degree program.

Golden West College in Huntington Beach, Calif., has a certificate program in retail management. Students who complete the program receive two certificates: the Western Association of Food Chains Retail Management Certificate and the Golden West College Certificate of Achievement. Golden West teaches students business skills such as marketing and accounting as well as communication and behavioral management. Graduates of the program should be prepared for entry-level management positions and further retail career advancement.

The University of Washington offers a certificate course in retail management through the Michael G. Foster School of Business. Courses in the retail management program include accounting, marketing, and merchandising. Students in the retail management program are required to complete a paid internship involving 10 to 12 weeks of fulltime employment. Retailers working with the University of Washington's internship program include Abercrombie and Fitch, Old Navy, Nordstrom's, JC Penny, Wal-Mart, Target, Sears and other large international retailers.
