Courses in Travel Management

If you're interested in a career in the travel industry, it's become more important to have specialized education to offset the emergence of the Internet as an easy-to-use alternative for many travelers. In this competitive environment, you need a comprehensive knowledge of destinations, culture and business-management principles to excel. Depending on your career ambitions, decide between travel management courses that grant a certificate, associate's, bachelor's or master's degree.
  1. Certificate Programs

    • Several institutions offer certificate courses in tourism and travel management, including Austin Community College in Texas; Central Coast College in Salinas, California; Fisher College in Boston, Massachusetts; Lansing Community College in Michigan and King's College in Charlotte, North Carolina. Lansing Community College has a Travel Agency Operations certificate course designed to give students with travel experience the training for entry-level jobs in a travel agency. The 18-credit course can be taken on campus or online and includes classes such as travel-industry operations, airline computer reservation, fund of business travel and destinations.

    Associate Degree

    • An associate's degree course in travel management is generally a two-year program offered by community colleges for those who want further education that a certificate can't offer. Schools with this course include AIB College of Business in Des Moines, Iowa; Broward College in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Bryan College in Springfield, Missouri; Central Pennsylvania College in Lancaster and Fisher College in Boston, Massachusetts. AIB College of Business' Associate Degree in Travel and Hospitality Management, is a 45-credit course covering subjects such as introduction to travel, tourism and hospitality, quality hospitality management, tour organization and operation, and event management.

    Bachelor Degree

    • More than 30 colleges and universities offer bachelor's degree courses in travel management, training students to work in travel agencies. These courses provide education in geography, accounting, communication and finance, in addition to core subjects in travel and internships. Arizona State University in Phoenix; Black Hills State University in Spearfish, South Dakota; George Washington University in Washington D.C.; Purdue University in Indianapolis, Indiana; Texas A&M University in College Station and the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg all offer bachelor's degrees in travel management. Black Hills State University's College of Business and Technology has developed a Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management degree course that combines a foundation in business management with specialization classes such as introduction to tourism and hospitality management, tourism management and tourism planning and development.

    Master's Degree

    • A master's degree in travel management often focuses on the marketing and financial aspects of tourism and may offer further specialization in international travel. A few institutions have developed this master's degree course, including the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York; Schiller International University in Largo, Florida; SUNY Maritime College in New York and the University of Hawaii- Manoa in Honolulu. Rochester Institute of Technology's Master of Science in Hospitality-Tourism Management is a 48-credit course that trains students to apply for jobs as middle managers and training directors. Core classes provide instruction in tourism policy analysis, tourism planning and development, customer-relationship management, travel-marketing systems and human-capital strategies.
