How to Work & Pursue a Nursing Degree at the Same Time

Earning a nursing degree at a technical college or university requires a lot of time and effort, and balancing a school schedule with a work schedule can seem impossible. Proper planning can help with this juggling act, giving you the time you need for school, work and relaxation.

Plan your school schedule so you can accommodate a job. For example, take four classes instead of six. Consider getting a part-time job, such as a position in retail or food service, that allows flexiblity with your school schedule. Be upfront during your interview and explain that you are in nursing school.

Apply for entry-level jobs in the medical field that offer on-site training or certification, such as a certified nursing assistant. As you assist nurses and work one-on-one with patients, you will learn how to complete basic nursing tasks and understand the patient-nurse relationship. This experience can be highlighted on your resume when you begin applying for nursing jobs.

Enter into a part-time Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) program. These programs take 18 months to complete and meet at night to accommodate working students. As an LPN, you can get your foot in the door at a doctor's office or hospital and work towards a promotion after you complete your Registered Nurse (RN) degree.

Take online courses. A variety of online schools offer nursing programs that allow you to complete work at any time of the day. This type of schooling can make sense for those who must work or parent while attending school. These programs are designed to complete schooling within a set period of time, but are also flexible.
