Examine your purpose for pursuing the MBA. Your purpose will largely determine where you go to school and what program of study you pursue while in your MBA program. For instance, if you plan to work for one of the world's largest corporations in upper-level management, you need to attend one of the top business schools. You may still be able to compete with someone from one of these schools if you attend a lower-tier school, but pedigree means a great deal in the business world. If you plan to pursue a particular specialization like marketing, you need to choose a school like Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management which is recognized as one of the top marketing schools in the country.

Apply to a school that meets your specific needs and can help you attain your career goals. Submit your application online or through the mail as required by each school. When pursuing an MBA degree, you need not have a bachelor's degree in business or accounting to get accepted. Most business schools look for diversity among their applicant pool, so as long as you can justify your application with your statement of intent, you may get accepted for admission. Most MBA programs will require you to submit a statement of intent along with scores from the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), previous college transcripts and your resume. An interview is often required as well. Many schools prefer applicants with at least two years of continuous work experience also.

Complete your curriculum courses. There are different types of delivery methods that schools use for MBA programs. Some schools offer a one-year accelerated program and some online programs in varying lengths, but the most common type of program is the two-year program. During these two years, you can expect to complete core courses during your first year of study. These courses are typically common to the degree requirements of all students in the MBA program, regardless of their area of specialization. Core courses may include economic analysis, management strategy and finance, among others.

Complete your specialization courses and any required projects. During your final year of study, you can expect to complete coursework in the field in which you eventually plan to work. Major areas of study can include fields like finance, marketing and human resource management. Some schools also may require that you complete a capstone project in order to graduate from the program.
