How to Internally Cite Websites

Although websites may have useful information for research papers, creating in-text citations for them can be challenging. A website rarely has a page number, and in some cases, it may not even have a listed author. MLA and APA formats feature different methods for internally citing a website, so follow the rules for whichever style you are using for your paper.

Instructions

  1. MLA

    • 1

Locate as much information about the website as you can other than its title. If the site or online article you use has a specific author or is run by a certain organization, make note of it.

    • 2

Cite the website using the same rules you would use for any other source. Write the author's name if known. If not, write the title of the organization that hosts the site you are citing. If the website has no author and is not owned by any specific organization, cite the article title as you would for a print work with no known author. Do not type the URL.

    • 3

Include the page number of the website if there is one. If you cite a PDF or a newspaper article that spans multiple pages, you need to include the page number. If there are no specific page numbers, do not invent one.

    APA

    • 4

Locate as much information about the website as you can other than its title. If the site or online article you use has a specific author or is run by a certain organization, make note of it. Find the year that the website was last updated if available.

    • 5

Type the author or organization name followed by a comma as you would for any other citation. If the website has no author or organization, type the article title in quotation marks with a comma inside the quotation marks. Do not type the URL.

    • 6

Type the year that the website was most recently updated, followed by a comma. If the website has pages, such as a PDF or a newspaper article that spans multiple pages, type "p." followed by the page number from which you took the information. If not, type "para." followed by the paragraph from which you took the information.
