How to Note Internet Sources on a Thesis

Citing an Internet source on a thesis incorrectly could result in lost marks. Professors will likely specify one of two citation styles for the thesis: the American Psychological Association (APA) or the Modern Language Association (MLA). When researching the thesis, students can choose from four main internet sources: website (entire site), Web page (article from online journal), Web page (article from online newspaper) and email.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite an entire Web page using APA format. If the entire website is used, it can be cited in the body of the paper. The citation for a Web page in APA format is as follows: "Website title. (URL).

    • 2

Cite an entire Web page using MLA format. The process for citing a Web page in MLA format requires the author to include more information than APA format. The format for MLA is as follows: "Title of Database. Date of electronic publication or latest update. Name of sponsoring institution or organization. Date the information is retrieved <URL>."

    • 3

Cite online journal articles with APA format. To cite a journal article, use the following format: "Author. (date of article). Article title. Journal Title, vol.(issue), pages. Date information retrieved, from URL"

    • 4

Cite an online journal article using MLA format. To cite a journal article, use the following format: "Author. "Article Title." Journal Title vol.issue (Year): pages. Date retrieved information <URL>."

    • 5

Cite an online newspaper using APA format. To cite an online newspaper article, use the following format: "Author. (Year, Month Day). Article title. Newspaper Title. Date information retrieved, from URL."

    • 6

Cite an online newspaper using MLA format. To cite an online newspaper article, use the following format: "Author. "Article Title." Newspaper Title Day Month Year, ed.: pages. Vol.Issue (Year): page. Date retrieved information <URL>."

    • 7

Cite an email. The email should not be cited in the reference list if using APA format. For example: "J.B. Hornblower (personal communication August 2, 2010)." would be used in the text of the paper. MLA format is different. Use the following structure: "Author. Title of E-mail in Quotes. E-mail to (the person who received the email). Date of the document."
