Online Bookkeeping Colleges

Bookkeepers perform basic accounting duties by calculating and recording financial information for businesses. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that bookkeepers earned a median salary of $33,450 per year in 2009. Online bookkeeping schools offer students an opportunity to pursue educational and training opportunities while continuing personal and professional obligations.

    • Daymar College, located in Louisville, Kentucky, offers an online certificate program in bookkeeping. The program focuses on payroll accounting and computerized accounting, and students learn how to use Microsoft Excel. Courses in the program teach students how to organize and manage financial transactions. Technical requirements at Daymar include at least a Windows 2000 or Mac OS 8 operating system, Internet Explorer 6, speakers, CD-ROM and a sound card.

    University of Houston

    • Located in Texas, the University of Houston offers a 27-week online bookkeeping certificate program. Students in the program learn about business communication, professional development, business computing essentials, administrative office procedures, accounting payroll and assets, and bookkeeping applications. Teachers in the program communicate with students through message boards and chat rooms. Graduates of the exam are qualified to take the Certified Bookkeeper exam available through the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers.

    George Mason University

    • George Mason University, located in Fairfax, Virginia, offers an online certified bookkeeper program that is 120 hours in length and leads to certification with the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers (AIPB). The online program allows students to complete the program at their own pace. Topics in the program cover adjusting entries, correcting accounting errors, book and tax depreciation, basic payroll, merchandise inventory, internal controls and fraud prevention.

    Bellevue College

    • Located in Bellevue, Washington, Bellevue College offers a certificate program in bookkeeping. The program is 31 credits and is available both on-campus and online. Students in the program take courses in business payroll tax accounting, small business computerized accounting, business mathematics, principles of accounting, business spreadsheet analysis and practical accounting. As of 2011, students taking the online program communicate with teachers through Blackboard Vista, an online learning system.
