How to Cite an APA Paper Presented at a Meeting

Many professors will allow you to use unpublished papers presented at meetings or conferences as sources when you are writing a term paper. However, it is important to remember to cite them, and that you cite them correctly. The American Psychological Association (APA) Publication Manual sets clear guidelines for the citation of unpublished papers presented at conferences or meetings. Format your citation in the following manner.

Instructions

    • 1

List the author of the paper in a last name, first initial format. For example:

      Smith, B.

    • 2

List the year and month of the meeting at which the paper was presented. This information should be enclosed in parentheses and followed by a period. For example:

      (2009, June).

    • 3

List the title of the paper. Only the first letter of the title and proper nouns should be capitalized. For example:

The conservative current and Bob Jones University.

    • 4

List the name and location of the meeting or conference in the following format:

Paper presented at the American Convention for Contemporary Historical Studies, Boston, MA.

    • 5

Ensure that the final citation appears in the following format:

Smith, B. (2009, June). The conservative current and Bob Jones University. Paper presented at the American Convention for Contemporary Historical Studies, Boston, MA.
