How to Cite a DOI in APA

A Digital Object Identifier, sometimes referred to as a "DOI," is a unique number assigned to articles from scholarly journals that appear online. MLA style does not require the use of Digital Object Identifiers in the citation of scholarly journal articles that appear online. However, if you are adhering to APA (American Psychological Association) style, you should include the DOI number if one is listed.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite the author's name, year of publication, article title, journal title, issue and volume number and page range, just as you would for an article that appeared in print. For example:

Doe, J. (1996). Finding the best Sri Lankan hotels. American Travel Journal, 16(3), 166-194.

    • 2

Complete your citation with the DOI number. List the letters "doi" in lowercase letters, followed by a colon, followed by the full number. Do not put a space in between "doi" and the colon, or between the colon and the number.

    • 3

Ensure that your finished citation appears in the following format:

Doe, J. (1996). Finding the best Sri Lankan hotels. American Travel Journal, 16(3), 166-194. doi:147.8920/3863098287

If no DOI number is given for the article you are citing, you must cite the URL instead. This would appear as follows:

Doe, J. (1996). Finding the best Sri Lankan hotels. American Travel Journal, 16(3), 166-194. Retrieved from http://www.atj.com/96/3/arts=8726
