How to Cite an Electronic Journal in APA Style

Citing an electronic journal according to American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines falls under the category of online periodical citations. According to the APA, such citations need to include as much information as possible and should use the same formatting as print periodicals. Such information includes the authors' names, the title of the article and periodical and any information about volume or issue numbers, if the source lists them. Note that some electronic journals are exact duplicates of their print counterparts in the case of magazines that are available both online and offline.

  Identify the names of the authors in the article. Make a note of the article title, the periodical title and the date of publication.

  Find a volume number and issue number, if available. Include the volume number even if the issue number is not available.

  Format the reference. Print the last names of the authors, followed by their first initials. Type the date of publication in parentheses. Write the title of the article, capitalizing only the first letter of the title and any proper nouns. Italicize the publication title and the volume number. Include the issue number in parentheses if the source provided one. Write "Retrieved from," followed by the URL of the source. For example: "Steinway, A. (2010). How to play the piano. The piano player's online magazine, 550 (10). Retrieved from http://www.thepianoplayersonlinemagazinetext.com/howtoplaythepiano."
