How to Cite Poems in APA

When quoting from a source in your paper, APA (American Psychological Association) format requires that you cite parenthetically within the text. Typical APA citation style requires the last name of the author, year of publication and page number. This applies when citing modern works of poetry. However, when citing classic poetry that is numbered by line and widely published, you should include the number of the line in the poem instead of the page number.

Instructions

    • 1

Divide lines with slashes when citing them within the text. For example:

One poem states that "ne'ermore were roses strewn / than moon of May at latest noon."

    • 2

Cite the last name of the author, year of publication and page number when citing modern poetry. For example:

One poem states that "ne'ermore were roses strewn / than moon of May at latest noon" (Smith, 2003, p. 14).

If you are citing classic poetry, replace the page number with the number of the lines you are citing. For example:

One poem states that "ne'ermore were roses strewn / than moon of May at latest noon" (Donne, 2003, 33-34).

    • 3

Split your citation into two if you mention the author by name in the text. Cite the year of publication after the name of the author, and the page number or line numbers after the quoted passage. For example:

Smith (2003) states that "ne'ermore were roses strewn / than moon of May at latest noon" (p. 14).
