How Do I Cite the National Institute of Mental Health Website in APA Style?

The National Institute of Mental Health is a government agency that researches the nature and treatment of mental illnesses. The organization also maintains a website that provides U.S. citizens with information pertaining to various mental illnesses. If you use a page from the NIMH website and need to cite it as a source in your reference list, simply follow the general format for the citation of non-periodical websites as laid out by the American Psychological Association (APA).

Instructions

    • 1

List the last name and first initial of the author, if one is credited. For example:

      Jones, B.

Pages on the NIMH website are not usually credited to specific authors. In this case, you should list the name of the organization as the author, followed by a period. For example:

      National Institute of Mental Health.

    • 2

List the date of publication in parentheses, followed by a period. For example:

      (2011, May 24).

If no date is listed, give the date as follows:

      (n.d.).

    • 3

List the title of the article, followed by a period. Only the first letter should be capitalized, along with any proper nouns. For example:

      Post-traumatic stress disorder in America.

    • 4

List the URL of the web page in the following format:

      Retrieved from http://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/post-traumatic-stress-disorder-ptsd/index.shtml

The finished citation should appear in the following format:

National Institute of Mental Health. (2011, May 24). Post-traumatic stress disorder in America. Retrieved from http://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/post-traumatic-stress-disorder-ptsd/index.shtml
