How Do You Capitalize an Internet APA Citation?

One of the differences between the citation style laid out by the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) and other citation styles has to do with the capitalization of certain titles. This capitalization style extends to the citation of Internet sources such as web pages and articles accessed on the web. To properly capitalize Internet citations according to APA style, follow these simple steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Capitalize only the first letters of titles when you are citing a web page or an article on the Internet. If there is a subtitle, capitalize the first letter of the subtitle. You must also capitalize any proper nouns that appear within the title or subtitle. (The top ten schools in America: Why we lag behind the Chinese education system.)

    • 2

Capitalize other titles and names in your citation as usual. This means that you must capitalize all names and words other than articles. However, never capitalize letters contained in a URL. A citation for a non-periodical web page citation would read as: McGee, Bobby. (2011, March 24). The top ten schools in America: Why we lag behind the Chinese education system. Retrieved from http://www.americaneducation.com/article8765378.htm.

    • 3

If you are citing an article from a scholarly journal, newspaper, or magazine that you accessed online, the name of the journal or newspaper should be capitalized normally. (The Journal of American Education Today)

    • 4

Capitalize in-text citations as usual (Smith, 2011, p. 11). If there is no author and you must use the title of the work for in-text citations, capitalize it as you normally would within the text ("Top Ten Schools in America," 2011, p.11).
