How Do You Put the Date in APA Format?

When citing a reference in American Psychological Association (APA) format, it is very important to put the reference's date in the correct place in the citation. The reference must include all parts of the subject matter you cited. Reading an APA style guide can help you understand the various kinds of content to cite. The date is always listed within parenthesis in an APA citation.

Instructions

    • 1

Write or type the reference author's name, starting with the last name followed by the initials of the first or middle name. An example is: Lee, H.

If no author is listed, then write or type the title of the article or book in italics. Follow the title with a period. An example, without the italicized type, is: To kill a mocking bird.

    • 2

List the year of the publication inside parenthesis after one blank space following the author's name. Place a period after the closing parenthesis. The format is: Lee, H. (1982).

If no author is listed, then place the publication date within parenthesis after one blank space following the article or book's tittle. Put a period after the closing parenthesis. An example is: To kill a mocking bird. (1982). The title, though, must be in italics.

    • 3

Write or type the rest of the citation elements after the date for a completed APA reference citation. The other elements are the book's title, which is always placed in italics, place of publication and publisher. An example of a complete reference citation for which the author is listed is: Lee, H. (1982). To kill a mockingbird. New York: Warner Books. Place the title in italics, though.

An example of a complete reference citation for which the author is not listed is: To kill a mocking bird. (1982). New York: Warner Books. The title, though, must be in italics.
