Bowker Books in Print is an online database that collects and distributes information on printed books, including bibliographic information, cover images, tables of contents and author biographies. To cite Bowker, follow the guidelines for the citation of a nonperiodical website. The exact form in which you should arrange bibliographic data for the page will depend on whether you are using MLA or APA style.

Instructions

  1. MLA Style

    • 1

Begin your reference entry with the name of the author. Invert the author's name so that the last name appears first, followed by the first name. For example:

      Smith, Paul.

    • 2

List the title of the page in quotation marks, followed by a period. For example:

      "The Life of Ernest Hemingway."

    • 3

List the name of the website in italics, followed by a period. For example:

      bowker.com.

    • 4

List the name of the publisher, followed by a comma. In this case, you would list:

      Bowker Books in Print,

    • 5

List the date on which the content was published. This should appear in the following format:

      1 Aug. 2009.

If only the year is given, list only the year. If no date of publication is given, list "n.d."

    • 6

List the medium of publication. This should appear as follows:

      Web.

    • 7

List the date on which you accessed the website. For example:

      11 Nov. 2010.

The finished citation should appear in your reference list as follows:

Smith, Paul. "The Life of Ernest Hemingway." bowker.com. Bowker Books in Print, n.d. Web. 11 Nov. 2010.

Many pages on Bowker do not credit a specific author. In this case, begin your citation with the title of the page. For example:

"The Life of Ernest Hemingway." bowker.com. Bowker Books in Print, n.d. Web. 11 Nov. 2010.

Lastly, MLA style does not require the inclusion of a URL when citing web sources, but you may include it if you wish. The proper format is to place it in angle brackets at the conclusion of your citation. For example:

Smith, Paul. "The Life of Ernest Hemingway." bowker.com. Bowker Books in Print, n.d. Web. 11 Nov. 2010. <http://www.bowker.com/index.php/article/14/131>
