How Do I Get a Transcript of My School Record?

Transcripts are documents kept by educational institutions for all current and former students. A transcript documents each class a student took throughout his career at that particular school. Classes he dropped, classes he withdrew from and all of his grades are documented on his transcripts. To obtain a copy of your official transcripts, you must contact your school's registrar's office to request them.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the registrar's office at your school. Depending on school policy you can call the registrar's office over the phone to request a copy of your transcripts, write a letter requesting your transcripts or even go to the school's website and electronically request a copy -- electronic transcript requests are only permitted in some schools.

    • 2

Provide the registrar's office with your name, Social Security Number, date of birth and the years during which you attended the school. Provide any additional information requested by the registrar's office. If you are mailing in your request you should include your current address and phone number and the address and name of the person or institution you want your transcripts sent to.

    • 3

Pay the fee to obtain your transcripts. Not all schools charge students to obtain copies of transcripts but some do; those that do typically charge $3 to $10 per copy. Transcript requests generally take up to 10 business days to process.
