The University of Washington's UW Medicine Pathology Native American Education Program brings middle school students to campus for educational activities designed to inform them of career opportunities in health sciences. During the Native American High School Summer Program at Harvard University, students attend science lectures and workshops, and even live in campus dormitories. The Native American Science and Engineering Program at the University of Arizona is a year-long program that encourages students to consider science careers by connecting them with scientists, hosting workshops and helping them apply for college.
Science bridge programs are designed to support students in transitioning from high school to college, or from community colleges to four-year universities. New Mexico State University's Bridge Program to American Indian Students in Community Colleges encourages Native American students to enroll in bachelor's degree programs in biomedical sciences. Likewise, the 500 Nations Bridge Collaboration at the University of Kansas supports students of Haskell Indian Nations University who are interested in pursing a four-year program in biomedical sciences at other universities.
The Native American Science and Technology program at the Rochester Institute of Technology focuses on teaching students to manage Native American lands using science and technology in conjunction with tribal values. Similarly, Humboldt University's Indian Natural Resource, Science and Engineering Program teaches students how to use science to support Native American communities. The Native Americans in Science, Engineering and Natural Resources program at Oregon State University is designed to prepare undergraduate science students for applying to and attending graduate school.
Currently, 36 colleges and universities are part of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium. These schools provide higher education opportunities to Native Americans, including science and engineering. Haskell Indian Nations University offers a bachelor's degree in environmental sciences and associate's degrees in natural resources and science. Salish Kootenai College offers bachelor's degrees in environment science and computer engineering and psychology. Some of the other schools in consortium also have science degree programs.
