Sensory Integration Training Programs

Sensory integration disorder, now more commonly referred to as sensory processing disorder, is a diagnosis involving hypo- and/or hypersensitivity to sensory input. For example, a child could be hypersensitive to viewing average lighting or listening to music at a moderate volume and require a more calming environment. Conversely, a child could be hypo-sensitive to touch and be calmed by a specially designed weighted blanket. The disorder manifests in a variety of ways.
  1. Treatment

    • The diagnosis of the disorder is often made by a pediatrician or school professional, but confirmation of the diagnosis and subsequent treatment is generally done by an occupational therapist. Frequently, the therapist is part of a team of other professionals, depending on the issues presenting in the child. Some larger school districts have an occupational therapist on staff.

    Training

    • Working with the disorder goes beyond the basic education required of occupational therapists, though some elements of it are included. Therapists require a special certification, known as the sensory integration and praxis test. This certification is also available to physical therapists and speech pathologists, but is predominantly acquired by occupational therapists. There are professionals in all three of these areas, however, that work with patients without the certification. They are limited though, in the scope of services they are able to provide.

    Content of Training

    • Sensory integration and praxis test certification training entails taking four intensive classes which last five days each. All four courses must be completed within a five years. The coursework is based on the work of Dr.A. Jean Ayers -- the doctor credited with identifying sensory processing disorder as a diagnosis. Courses provide in-depth training on the theory, science, and techniques used in treatment. This includes instruction in the administering of the sensory integration and praxis tests and the planning of intervention strategies based on test results.

    Location of Training

    • Sensory integration and praxis test certification is only offered through the University of Southern California in conjunction with the company, Western Psychological Services. Courses are offered in locations throughout the United States and other countries. Available course offerings are listed at the university's website.
