The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration makes scholarship assistance available to marine biology students through the Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program. Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarships are awarded in the amount of $12,000 per year for educational costs, and also award an additional $30,000 cost of living stipend per year, as well $10,000 to support research during the summer. Master's candidates are eligible for up to two years of support, while doctoral candidates may be supported for up to four years. To be eligible, a student must be pursuing a degree at the graduate level, and must be a United States citizen or permanent resident. The annual deadline for application is March 17.

The American Academy of Underwater Sciences offers educational grant assistance to graduate-level marine biology students conducting research that uses diving through two scholarships. The Kevin Gurr Scholarship is awarded in the amount of $2,500 to a master's-level student, and the The Kathy Johnston Scholarship is awarded each year to a Ph.D. candidate. The AAUS may also award $1,500 scholarships to the runners-up. To be eligible, a student must be a member of AAUS, must be conducting or planning to conduct research that uses diving as a primary research tool, and must be studying at the graduate level. The annual deadline for applying is June 30.

The University of North Carolina Wilmington makes a number of scholarships available to its marine biology students. The Department of Biology and Marine Biology Merit Scholarship is awarded in the amount of $500 each year to a graduate or undergraduate student in the department on the basis of academic achievement. The Jay Hensley Endowed Scholarship is awarded each year in the amount of $1,000 to a junior or senior undergraduate student who is pursuing a degree in marine biology at UNCW. The Charles and Kay Bolles Marine Biology Scholarship is awarded in the amount of $2,500 to an undergraduate marine biology student who is enrolled on a full-time basis and can demonstrate both academic achievement and financial need. The annual application deadline for UNCW marine biology scholarships is March 5. Interested students should visit the UNCW website for a full list of available scholarships.
