How to Apply for the Aspire Scholarship

The Aspire Scholarship is a financial assistance program for low income families in New Zealand. Qualifying students can receive up to $15,000 each year towards private secondary school education tuition. An additional allowance of up to $1,500 is awarded for costs related to schooling, such as school supplies. Boarding costs are not provided for. The Aspire Scholarship is granted only for private secondary education, and public or state school students are not eligible to receive this award. The Aspire Scholarship was introduced in 2010, and as of October 2010 has provided more than 120 New Zealand students with private school educations.

      Visit the official New Zealand Ministry of Education website (see Resources). Access the eligibility requirements for the Aspire Scholarship, located in section two.

      Read the eligibility requirements for Aspire Scholarship application and verify that all requirements can be met. As of October 2010, these requirements include: Student must be entering at least year nine of secondary schooling in 2012, the student's parents (or primary caregiver) must have a household gross income of $56,000 or less (excluding Working For Families tax credits), parents must have a total net worth of $200,000 or less (household contents excluded), student or parents must not be a beneficiary of a trust (exceptions may be made) and the student must be a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand.

      Obtain any documents that provide proof of income and assets. This may include tax forms and pay statements. This information will be required when you complete the application form.

      Obtain an application form for the Aspire Scholarship at the Ministry of Education website (see Resources) if forms are currently available. The "Introduction" section contains downloadable application forms, or a date that states when the application forms will be available again. As of October 2010, the Ministry of Education states that "Application forms and guidelines for these scholarships will be available in January 2011."

      Complete the Aspire Scholarship application form in its entirety, providing all requested information. Information needed includes name of student, age, school, desired school, and financial information about the student's household. Attach copies of financial statements if requested.

      Submit the Aspire Scholarship application to the Ministry of Education. When applications are being taken, it is possible to submit electronically, by mail or in person at your local Ministry of Education office.
