How to Apply for the Core Philly Scholarship in Philadelphia

Paying for college can be a hardship for many families. Unfortunately many young men and women have difficulty pursuing their educational goals because of financial burdens. For this reason, the City of Philadelphia has created an initiative that assists seniors of a Philadelphia high school with their first year of college tuition. Seniors would be eligible for a maximum of $3,000 to be used at a participating Pennsylvania school.

      Before applying for a Core Philly scholarship all applicants must have completed their FAFSA application. If you have not already done so, go to the FAFSA website and complete and submit your application (see Resources below).

      After completion of your FAFSA application you should confirm that you meet the residency requirements to receive a Core Philly scholarship. If you are a student at a Philadelphia public or charter school you will not be required to submit a proof of residency. However, if you attend a private school or parochial school both yourself and at least one of your parents will be asked to submit documentation proving your are a resident of Philadelphia.       Given that the Core Philly scholarship can only be used at participating Pennsylvania schools, you should make sure that the college you have applied to participates in this program. You can find list of schools active with this scholarship on Core Philly's website (see Resources below).

      You can begin the application by visiting https://secure.corephilly.com/cgi/apply.html and clicking on the green button that reads, "Begin Application For Core Philly Scholarship." At this time, you will be asked to make a user name and password. Print or write down this information given that you may need to access your application at a later date. Once you completed all questions, press the "Submit" button to send your information. It is recommended that you print out the submission page and retain it for your records.

      Once you have completed the above steps and your application has been submitted, you will receive an email confirming that it was processed successfully. The majority of applicants begin receiving notification of their financial awards sometime after June 15th. You can follow up on your application at anytime by emailing [email protected].
