How to Apply for an Indian Scholarship in the U.S.

According to the National Center for Job Statistics, only 1 percent of American college students are Native American. There are several special scholarships available for those of Native American heritage which may help increase enrollment in the future.

      Research available scholarships. The American Indian College Fund, the Native American Scholarship, Cherokee Nation Higher Education Scholarship and U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs Scholarships are a few. The amounts awarded varies between $500 to $10,000.

      Fill out the application. It is important that the student make sure they meet all the requirements listed for a particular scholarship. Certain scholarships require a specific GPA, residency, involvement in Native American activities or pursuing a specific degree.

      Provide documentation of Native American heritage. Native American scholarships require proof of ethnicity and tribe membership. A birth certificate, photograph and tribal ID number are all accepted forms of proof depending on the scholarship.
