The rising cost of college tuition makes it difficult for many to afford an advanced education. However, scholarships are available in a variety of fields to help offset tuition rates.

Find scholarships. Do some research on the Internet to locate the type of scholarship you're looking for, i.e., for nursing, engineering, just for women, etc. If you're in school, ask your guidance counselor for help in finding scholarships. Or, ask a librarian to help you track down ones that fit your needs. Once you've found scholarships that fit seem to your needs, you must make sure you are eligible to apply for them. Scholarships are very specific as to who is eligible to receive them.

Follow directions precisely. If the application is to be filled out with an ink pen, don't use a pencil. If you're supposed to type the information into the form, don't write it in by hand.

    • 3

Fill out the scholarship application completely and accurately. Check and double-check to make sure you have filled in every line and answered every question on the application. Also be sure your answers are complete and accurate. Correct any spelling errors and/or typos.

    • 4

Send the application to the correct place or person. This might sound like a no-brainer, but if you send the application to the wrong person or place, your application will not be processed, or the processing will be delayed.

    • 5

Meet the deadlines. Make sure you have completed and sent the application before the deadline. If the deadline is October 10, don't wait until October 11 to send it. Most application deadlines are firm; sending in a late application will cause yours to be ignored.
