How to Apply for Scholarships for Women

Thousands of different types of scholarships are available to women seeking higher education. Many scholarships offered by both the government and private industries serve to aid women in their pursuit of college degrees. Despite the large number of available scholarships, people often have a difficult time finding the right scholarship opportunities.

Instructions

    • 1

Search for government-awarded scholarships for women. Conduct a simple search for "women's scholarships" in a search engine. Try to visit only .edu, .org or .gov sites to ensure that you are going straight to the source of the scholarship (see Resources).

    • 2

Search for scholarships related to your field or desired field of study. Several organizations and public charities award scholarships to women based on the subjects of their academic pursuits. One such organization is the American Association of University Women, which awards grants to undergraduate and graduate candidates. Women who have demonstrated academic or professional excellence in math, science and technology have many scholarship opportunities. Several universities also offer scholarships for women in the fine/visual arts field (see Resources).

    • 3

Search for scholarships offered by professional service industries, such as the Women's International Network of Utility Professionals. You might find that professional service groups offer scholarships to members.

    • 4

Visit the websites of the colleges to which you will apply. Many colleges offer their own women's and minority scholarships for outstanding candidates. Navigate through your college's website or call your college's student services office to gather information about scholarships for women. This can aid in your final college decision.

    • 5

Apply for scholarships by filling out all of the required documents. Each scholarship application will have different requirements. You may have to write an essay, have an interview or provide letters of recommendation.

    • 6

Review your scholarship application by creating a checklist of required materials and checking off each item as you have completed it. Answer all supplemental questions and provide all supplemental materials.

    • 7

Create a simple spreadsheet in a word-processing program to keep a record of each scholarship you have applied to, its requirements, status, due date and expected results date. This will help keep you organized.
