Look at the section scores at the top of the page. There are scores for reading, mathematics and writing skills. These scores range from 20 to 80. Average scores for a high school junior are reading 47, writing 46 and mathematics 48, as of January 2011.
Add together the section scores and determine the section index. This number is used to calculate the eligibility of a student for National Merit Scholarship Corporation programs (NMSC). The average high school junior's section index is a 141, as of January 2011.
Examine the percentile score located underneath the section scores. This score compares how students scored in context with the rest of their age group across the nation.
Look at the "Your Skills" section on the results sheet. This gives direct feedback on the areas that need improvement. You can determine which skill sets need further improvement before taking the SAT.
Read through the "Your Answers" section to determine the specific questions that were answered incorrectly to find more specific areas for improvement.
