How to Convert PSAT Scores

Your PSAT scores become a analytical tool when you convert them to the same scale as the SAT. The three test parts and the scoring results of the PSAT and the SAT are almost identical. One important difference exists, however. Your score report on the PSAT shows two numbers for each section and for the total score. The SAT uses three numbers, and the last one is always a zero. When you make the conversion from two numbers on your PSAT results to three numbers, your PSAT scores will predict the probable outcome of your SAT scores.

Writing the PSAT section names begins the conversion process

Write down the names of the three parts of the PSAT: Critical Reading, Math and Writing, on a piece of paper in black pen.

    • 2
Locate and circle your scores in red.

Circle your scores for Critical Reading, Math and Writing on your official PSAT test report, using your red pen. Each of these section scores will range from a low of 20 to a high of 80.

    • 3

Record these scores on your paper with black pen, under the appropriate heading.

    • 4

Add a zero to each score. For example, if your score for Critical Reading is 51, make that score 510. These numbers are the same as your SAT scores.

    • 5

Add your three converted scores together using a calculator. This total is the score that you could expect to earn on the SAT, if you took the test today. It can be as low as 600 and as high as 2400.
