How to Calculate PSAT Scores

The PSAT is the preliminary SAT, which is a test offered to high school underclassmen. The main purpose of the test is to offer the students a practice test for their college entrance exams. The PSAT is also used as the basis for scholarships for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). The College Board, a national organization, provides the test. The test is often given right at the student's high school and is usually administered in October.

  1. Getting Started

Know how many questions the student correctly scored on each section. The test is comprised of 125 questions and is broken down into three categories: critical reading, mathematics and writing skills. To figure out the PSAT scores, you need to know how many questions the student correctly scored on each section.

    • 2

Find out how many correct answers you scored and how many incorrect answers. You take the number of incorrect scores and multiply it by .25. You take that number and subtract that from the number of correct answers. That will give you the raw number for each section.

    • 3

Convert the raw into the scaled score. To convert the raw into the scaled score, it depends on difficulty of the test. There is a conversion chart for the raw number scored. A sample chart is listed below. The scaled scores will range from 20 to 80 per section. Once the scaled score is figured for each section, add the three sections and that will be the score, with 240 being the highest score possible. You can obtain the scale from the College Board. There are only slight changes between the test and the scales.
