How to Study for the Customs Broker Exam

The Customs Broker Exam is a valuable way to determine whether an individual has an exhaustive understanding of all import regulations. The exam is administered by the Customs and Border Protection Agency (CBP) twice a year. The CBP provides detailed information about exam locations, test times and potential testing topics on its website at GBP.gov. Rules and requirements are also listed on the site--failure to follow customs instructions can disqualify a test taker. Studying for the Customs Broker Exam can be an overwhelming task without proper preparation and study skills.

Study two hours every day for six months before the test. Set a specific study schedule that is incorporated into a daily routine. Avoid distractions like television and the Internet while studying for the exam. Print, highlight and make notes on the compliance publications that are listed at CBP.gov. Cross-reference citations and detailed information contained in the government publications. Reinforce the material by studying in 30 minute increments and reviewing the material every couple of hours. Avoid cramming right before the test.

    • 2

Create "cheat sheets" using information from the resources listed at CBP.gov. Prepare printed reference materials to use during the exam. These resources are allowed during testing. Create highlighted and customized cheat sheets on free trade agreements, merchandise processing, fee exemptions, textiles and harbor maintenance fees. Print out charts, facts, figures and tables from the CBP website. Use a binder for storing all printed reference materials that will be used during the test.

    • 3

Practice by taking sample exams. Use your binder during practice tests and add additional resources that might be lacking from your compilation of cheat sheets. Rely on the binder to search for classification terms and important service ports. Strive to take a minimum of five practice exams. Practice exams can be found on CBP.gov. These practice exams include answer keys. Highlight and review any missed questions on the practice test.

    • 4

Study with friends who are also preparing for the test. Gain unique experience from other students who have taken practice exams. Quiz each other on terms, topics and themes related to customs laws. Focus on detailed trade agreements, processing procedures, merchandise handling and related fee requirements. Evaluate sample questions and analyze trade agreement texts. Study the breakdown of customs additions and deductions.

    • 5

Make simple flashcards and study guides. Use flashcards to memorize the Code of Federal Regulations and custom laws in the Tariff Act of 1930. These resources can be found by doing a general Internet search. Memorize specific time frames, such as how many days it takes to make a legal entry or how many years merchandise can officially be stored in a warehouse. Flashcards and study guides are convenient and can be used repeatedly.
