How to Study for the Stanford Achievement Test

The Stanford Achievement Test (SAT) is an exam given to students between kindergarten and 12th grade, to measure their abilities in subjects such as math, science and reading comprehension. Despite the name, the Stanford Achievement Test is not related to the college-entrance SAT exam. However, the test does use multiple-choice questions and short answer, which is the same format as the college-entrance exam. Preparing to take the Stanford Achievement Tests requires proper planning and a calm attitude so that you will be prepared to deal with any of the questions, whether or not you know the correct answer.

Instructions

    • 1

Review a study guide to prepare for the type of questions asked and the wording of such questions. Study the guide's helpful hints for taking the test. Purchase a general study guide if you are taking several different standardized tests.

    • 2

Schedule study periods every few days to keep the material fresh in your mind. Alternate between the math/science portion and the English/reading portion.

    • 3

Sit for a practice test. Prepare for the hours of sitting and deadline pressure by scheduling a time on the weekend to take the entire practice test in one sitting as you would the exam. Review your results afterward to determine what needs to be improved.

Consult a Tutor or Learning Center. A tutor or learning can help teach you the lessons you may have missed or the subjects where you are consistently getting low scores. A tutor or test-prep class can also help with simple test-taking strategies and relaxation techniques. Consult with the guidance counselor at your school about tutoring or test-prep courses or post an ad for a tutor at a local college.
