How to Prepare for the Praxis 2

Educational Testing Service administers the Praxis II tests for teachers. These tests assess knowledge of effective teaching strategies and knowledge of specific subject matter. Teachers must pass the Praxis II before obtaining teaching credentials. ETS offers test preparation information and materials, including a PDF pamphlet entitled "Reducing Test Anxiety." The pamphlet suggests that the keys to passing the Praxis are to prepare for the test, use an organized study plan and practice the test.

Find out the exact tests you need to take. You may need to take one or more Praxis II tests depending on the certification you are seeking and your state's requirements. Visit the state requirements section of the Praxis website to help determine exactly which tests you should take. Your state's Department of Education will also be a good resource for this.

    • 2

Determine if you are ready to take the test. The test can be long and stressful; there is a testing fee. If you aren't ready for the test and aren't sure that you can be ready by the testing date, it may be a waste of time and money to attempt the Praxis II. Find the PDF booklet - General Information and Study Tips - on the Praxis website. Use the checklist at the back of the booklet to determine if you are ready to take the test.

    • 3

Find out what the tests cover and collect study materials. Review your notes and textbooks if you've taken any classes that cover the test material. Look for study groups of other people taking the same test. You might also find commercial study guides for some Praxis II tests and ETS provides "Test at a Glance" guides for many tests that outline the material and provide practice questions.

    • 4
Schedule your test so that you'll have plenty of time to prepare.

Plan and organize a study routine. Give yourself enough time to study and practice without cramming right before the test. Make sure there is plenty of time before the test date for you to study. There are multiple testing opportunities for each test, so choose a date that gives you enough time to prepare.

    • 5

Familiarize yourself with the types of questions on the test. The different Praxis II tests may contain multiple choice and constructed response questions. The General Information study guide from ETS explains these questions and give examples.

    • 6

Stick to your study and practice schedule. The test will be less stressful if you are confident that you have prepared yourself and are confident that you understand the test topics. Sticking to this schedule will not just increase your confidence, but it will increase your subject knowledge. You will feel prepared because you will be prepared.

    • 7
Get enough sleep as you prepare to take the Praxis II exam.

Eat and sleep well before the test, but it's just as important to eat and sleep well during your entire process of study and practice. Try to keep your sleeping, eating, exercising and social routines as close to normal as possible. This will make your study time more effective, reduce stress and reduce your anxiety.
